This is not depression. She might have eaten something nasty in the basement. Cats chase crawling things, so maybe she ate a spider that bit her or some nasty bug.

Can you take her to a vet? Many vets work with animals shelters, so if money is a problem, check with the vets in the area to find out if they will let you pay on a sliding scale or because of a medical coupon you can get at the shelter.

bushg agrees: Any number of things she could have gotten into, usually sticking out the tongue is a sign of distress.

Hmmm... I would try to feed him something and get her to drink as well.
Ideas:
1) check her mouth and airway to see if its blocked.
2) check her ears for signs of ear infections because damp basements can cause breeding grounds for airborn bacteria
3) look for any teeth decay or injury
4) take her to the vet if she continues this behavior

There could be something stuck on the roof of her mouth, preventing her from eating and drinking and causing her to gag.

Please get her to a vet.

Christmas tree ornaments or tinsel it could be any number of things. I agree with wondergirl If she were mine I would find somewhere to take her.

This could have ended in tragedy. Cats can't go long without eating or drinking before going into liver failure. I'm glad you got her to the vet in time.
