    My cat is acting strange
    My cat has recently lost about 4 pounds in a month. She used to be quite large (15 pounds) and very vocal and fun loving. Recently she has been secluding herself and living under my bed not coming out for anything. If you try to stroke her she kind of growls but sounds like she has no energy (she doesn't hiss just this mix of puring and growling) She doesn't eat much at all anymore or when she does she takes a few small bits and she's done. She's lost some of her personality too. She doesn't come out anymore when we eat or watch TV which used to be a regular occurrence. A recent x-ray didn't indicate anything wrong but there is certinaly something wrong in my mind. I had heard once that when cats are dying they like to hid under things to get away and die quietly. Could it be true my cat is dying? Is it likely that there is something causeing her not to eat which has now caused her to become weak from not eating? Would this not show up in an x-ray? Does my explanation seem to indicate anything serious that could be wrong with her?

    I presume that when you had the X-ray, the vet did blood tests. With our vet it's one of the first things they will do if the cat is off-colour.
    Has she been "done", if not and she has been socialising with the local toms... could be more fun headed your way.

    She has had blood tests too, and was "done" a number of years ago. It seems even since I asked the question she has deteriorated quite a bit. Will be taking her into the vet again today, however I'm just assuming I will hear the same thing "we can see anything wrong with her" when blatently there is.

    Try another vet, doesn't hurt to get a second opinion. You would if it was you and the diagnosis your GP (Doc) gave you weren't happy with!

    I have 5 cats and got back from holiday (had house and cat sitter) to find one was missing. Found him, he was OK, but was missing 3/4 of his tail... poor thing. Got him sorted at 200.00 GBP, I now have a manx cat :-)

    Well to end this story I actually think we may have to put her down. Last night was a rough night for her.. she has deteriorated rapidly and we put her on the fleece blanket to try and comfort her and she peed all over it and didn't even move. She just lays limp in your arms. Will be taking her to the vet, but we are guessing she is just on her way out and we can't do anything about it.

    Hope you are wrong, but if she is bad... it hurts but it's the kindest thing to do. I'm not looking forward to it if/when I have to make that decision. How old is she?

    We got her when she was about 8 weeks and have had her for 9 years. Such quick deterioration in such a short amount of time.. something is wrong. If its just old age then I want her to be comfortable and she isn't right now. We shall see what the vet says.

    She sounds young to be sick from old age. Cats of 15+ are fairly usual. Our old one "Katie" is somewhere about 13-16 (we got her as a stray when our factory moved). Good Luck with the vet, hope she improves.

    Turns out she was anemic and had cancer. We had to put her down this morning. She would have just died off in discomfort. There was nothing we could do except put her out of discomfort. Thanks for your thoughts! We are pleased that we still have another cat who we hope will continue to give us joy for a while!

    OH MY GOSH! I am so sorry for your loss!! Your cat did regress quite rapidly! I am sorry to hear you had to put her down so quickly.

    I have 3 cats but am very partial to a couple of them and can hardly imagine them not with me.

    Keep you head up and know that your cat is in a better place now looking down on you.

    Oh wow, I'm so sorry to hear about what happened :(

    Cancer seems so tricky to catch in time in cats. Ours went in for 5 months with constant visits before they discovered the cancer.
