VW GTI Check Engine Light

The check engine light on my 2003 VW Golf GTI (44,000 miles) came on the other day. The VW dealer wants to charge me $110 just to diagnose the root of the problem. My understanding is this is nothing more than hooking the car up to their computer. Are there other options I have to understanding the problem?
