    73 Dodge 3/4ton 4X4 Truck
    Starter solenoid keeps going out-overheats and quits working. Know this means too much voltage to the solenoid, what needs adjusted/replaced now? Have replaced voltage regulator, plug wires, battery, rotor & points.

    How many times have you replaced solenoid?sounds like either the solenoid is defective or the starter is putting too much strain on the solenoid... also check to see how close it is to the exhaust... mine went in my 93 dodge because it was too close to exhaust manifold pipe.. ended up putting a shied around it to deflect heat.. those are my best guess bud... sorry if they don't help but might be worth checking

    Thank You Tommyp--solenoid is up away from headers--after doing more research figured out that there are 2 alternators(12 & 18 amp) available for this truck as Dodge was in process of changing over electrical systems in 72 & 73 and alternator was replaced almost 2 months ago(start of all of these problems)---thinking it got the 18 and needed the 12. Think we might look into the heat shield option anyway, we replaced exhaust manifold and put headers on about a year ago and they put off allot of heat. Truck has been in my family since new and has really become a project for us.
