1988 Mercury Grand Marquis windshield wiper's
Regards my question of 10/10/07 of which CaprtainRich stated that I could test the windshield wiper switch with an unpowered test lamp.He further says that I can test the switch right at the wiper motor connector. This sounds good, and easy too. However I have run into some (hopefully) minor problems regarding the terminology that he uses. I have removed the steering column covering and note that the switch disappears into the column itself! In a Chilton's auto repair manual for 1987-1991 vehicles it states that: "to remove a wiper switch one has to remove the wiper switch retaining screws. The next step says Disconnect the wire connector and remove the wiper switch. ". Firstly I don't see any wiper switch retaining screws as the wiper switch runs into the interior of the steering column... Two, in the second sentence quoted above is that the wiper motor connector which CaptainRich says to test the switch at?
Then again I can't identify where the wiper motor is as there are no diagrams in this Chilton repair guide that specifically point it out.
Can someone please clarify these questions for me?
    Thanks,

The connector to test if power is getting to the wiper motor is under the hood and should be located at the driver's side rear of the engine compartment.

Testing here would verify if power is passing through the wiper switch.

So, if power is not getting through the switch, you need to focus on the switch and fuses. If power is getting through, you don't need to disassemble the column. But changing a wiper motor is not a simple matter either.
