Saturn wont start, power locks wont work, radio resets itself.

My 99 Saturn has had some starting problems in the past. It would sometimes not start but if you let it sit from anywhere from 45 minutes to 24 hours, it would eventually start. Or, after having Dad look at it, we could tap the starter and it would work. So we thought it was the starter. I didn't have it repaired right away due to $..then it stopped doing it. Well, 3 months passed with no problem at all and it did it again. But this time the power locks wont work and the radio resets (can't see screen with time or station, can't change station, staticy sounds). But the power windows work, the lights work, the air works...But there is nothing, not even a click when we turn the key. We tried tapping the starter and it didn't work. But after letting it sit for a while, it started again and haven't had a problem again..yet. HELP! WHAT THE HECK IS THIS? DO I NEED A NEW STARTER? I had it to a mechanic but because it didn't do it while in his presence, he couldn't pinpoint the problem. I thought if it was just a starter issue, it wouldn't mess with the power locks and radio (or electrical system). Any guesses?

I have also been having problems with my 00 saturn SL2. My power locks stopped working when the car is put in park or drive (they used to lock when put in drive and unlock when put in park)...and now sometimes when the key is taken from the ignition, the air will still run...my blinkers also are on the fritz. I havent been able to figure it out either...wierd cars...let me know if you find out anything.

. Check all under-dash and under-hood fuses with a test light or multimeter. Here's how:

http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/cars-tr...tml#post252145

. Clean battery cable and terminal connections.
. Check fluid level in the battery and ensure it's fully charged.
. Clean connections going to the starter motor and starter solenoid, making sure to disconnect the negative battery cable first.
. Check for any codes--AutoZone will do this for free.
. Read the link below:

If, after all of the above is done, the starter motor doesn't crank consistantly, replace the starter motor. AutoZone will also test starter motors for free.

i have a car like this at my shop. I am thinking the starter needs to be replaced, but i also read something about the ignition swithc failing, causing power loss to some of the cars components. i think that the ign switch is failing, casuing not enough power to go to certian acc's, such as windows, locks, raido, starter etc..

but def have everythign checked out first.
