Motorcycle painting: How can I get a good finish?

I'm painting two plastic fairings on my bike. I sanded orignally with 80grit then 400 grit like the guy at the shop said too. Then I put three coats of paint. It looked fine. I went to the clear coat and got an orange peel effect. I was told to wet sand it with 1000grit and use a rubbing compound. I did and it looked dull. So I sanded again thru the clearcoat with 800 grit and repainted. It looks better now but still has a slight peel effect. Now people are saying to wet sand again with 2000grit and use the compound. I sont want to go thru this again when the rubbing compound only made it dull the first time. Any ideas?
