Jeep recoding

I need to get my Jeep inspected, but in order to pass inspection the engine light needs to be off. A friend of mine has the Autoxray Code Scout 2500. We've cleared the light numerous times, but it seems the light continues to come back on. The code is PO 601. It tells us there's an "Internal control module memory check sum error", meaning once I went over 100,000 miles Jeep wanted me to come back and have alot of work done. Here's what seems to be happening. We'll reset the code, turn the Jeep on and the light stays off, but as soon as I take the key out of the ignition, put it back in and start it, the light comes back on. The key seems to be tied in some how. We also tried unhooking the battery, which did work with the key in the ignition, but as soon as we took out the key and tried it again, the light came on. Anyone know what we're doing wrong or anything we can do? Thanks y'all!
