Honda Accord 2001 - transmission problem ??

I have 2001 Accord Ex automatic transmission with 64,000 miles. Since couple of weeks I see some problem in gear shifting. The problem shows up only for 2-3 minutes in the morning when I take out the car from parking. The car jerks when I stop. It does not go beyond 20 miles per hour. Yesterday even check engine light came up when I tried to accelerate. For remaining of the day there is no problem and gear shifting is very smooth.

There has been cold morning since the beginning of Jan. Is it because of cold weather? Does this mean transmission problem? Any suggestion appreciated.

Thanks.

1. Attach scan tool to the data link connector and check for any codes.
2. Warm up engine and transmission, drain the transmission fluid, and refill with Mobil 1 Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF. Synthetic transmission fluids perform much better than conventional ATF, particularly in winter. Verify first that the Mobil 1 product meets the specs for your Accord. If this doesn't improve the situation, then you are likely facing a rebuild. Transmission problems normally stem from not changing the transmission fluid regularly.
3. If the transmission is sludged up, drain the transmission fluid, and add AutoRX to conventional transmission fluid. Go through the cleaning and rinse phases with conventional ATF, then switch to synthetic ATF.

The cold is making your problem worse, it is not the source of your problem. I assume you have checked your transmission fluid. Be sure is is checked and topped off per Honda's owners manual. Other than that, nearly all transmission problems should be left to the pros. I am sure that there are good trans shops in every town but I'd start by having a Honda dealer give you their opinion and estimate. Then you could shop around if you want.
