Dodge won't keep running

I have a 1985 Dodge power wagon 4x4...when I turn the switch to start it..it works and starts alright but when I release the key the old devil dies...as long as the key is held in the on position it runs o.k. but release the key and it just grunts and quits...I have replaced the column switch and the computer relay on the firewall...any other suggestions please..

. Check the ignition switch for wear, pitting, or melting.

. Check switch for proper installation.

Those are great trucks.

It's been a while, but I'm betting that you have a ballast resistor on it. It looks like a white piece of ceramic with a couple of wires on it attached to the firewall.

It could very well be the problem. If it has failed, you'll lose spark. It is bypassed when cranking.

Hope it helps.
