buying a used car

Im contemplating on purchasing a 1995 Ford Explorer with 110miles. I got a good deal on it(1000k), BUT I was told the gears are not shifting smoothly. Im thinking its the transmission going out soon. Im on a strict budget, but need a 2nd car for myself; giving my mother my 1st car; moving, and getting married this year......so much to do, little $$. Do you think it will be worth it to buy the car and just put a new transmission in it? Or do you think its even the transmission? What is the ave cost for a transmission??????
