Hi I have a beloved '84 Buick Century. It has been running very well until we noticed a bad oil leak.We couldn't figure out where it was coming from , and my husband found water in the oil. We took it in for diagnosis and were told it blew a head gasket, the rear one by the transmission. The auto shop said it was gone. I was told by an engine shop the gasket could be replaced and since it never overheated it was probably due to wear and tear of the bolts due to age, and that this is common with those kind of enginges. It's $500.00 to repalce the rear seal. I would rather spend money on this car that has been in my family for a long time and we know the history of than buying another used car and ending up with an unknown can of worms. The first (used) car we ever financed turned out to have lots of expensive problems . I prefer to stick with the known.
I would really love some advice, My husband seems to think a new engine is needed, at that rate I would be without my car for a very long time. Thanks so much.

Everybody keeps telling me just go buy another used vehicle instead of dealing with the problems of my vehicle. For one I don't have the money and for another it is exactly like you said you know the car and very likely could end up with a new set of problems.

I have had the seals done before and it worked for me as long as there isn't another motor problem too. Although when they tear it down to replace the seals they need to look at the pistons too to make sure none of that stuff needs replaced too.
