Crown Vic problem

I have a '95 Crown Vic, and yesterday as I was driving down the road and came to a stop, my engine stalled, and it started right back up. I started driving again, then my engine stoped responding, it didn't stall, it just stoped responding, a sec or two later, it came right back on, only to stop responding another sec later. The entire way back to my house, every few seconds it would just stop responding, then come back on for a few seconds, when I got back to my house, it idled fine, and it rev'd fine. Not sure what it could be, just put in a new battery, and I heard a detonation or two during the non-responsive time, so I doubt it to be the fuel pump. Any suggestions would be helpful.
