98 Honda Accord slow to start.

Hello all..…
I’m having a problem with my 98 Honda Accord and was hoping someone could help. It's a EX V6. Idle is smooth. Power is strong. No roughness is engine.

This is an intermittent problem and seems to have no "rhyme or reason" as to temperature, time of day, driving conditions...etc...etc....although it seems to be getting worse. No codes on computer.

It cranks fine but just wont fire up at times. I will turn the key and sometimes it will fire immediately. Other times....it may take 3 or 4 series of 4 or 5 second cranking to fire. A friend mentioned that it sounds like my fuel injects are clogged. Mileage is 130,000 and as far as I know, the injectors have not been cleaned...nor has the fuel pump/filter been changed.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, WrkHrdPlaHrdr

Another recent thread here says there's some sort of safety recall on ignition system on these hondas. Go to your dealer and ask them about it.

Thanks for the help. It is so cool that there is a place to go where people want to help each other. I appreciate it.

I will check the main relay as it seems to be a common problem and maybe I can head off trouble before it happens.......but it appears that AccordxVxSix was correct with the battery.

Forgive my ignorance....but it appears that a battery CAN have enough power to crank strongly....but NOT provide enough for the ignition to function properly! I guess I'm a bit old school. A new battery solved the problem. Live and learn!

Thanks again for all your help.

Honda won't start when hot.

Believe me, it's the Main EFI Relay that causing the problem. Had this happen to both my 91 & 98 Accords. You can buy the part at Honda dealerships for about $80, but I got mine on ebay from NORM REEVES HONDA TEMECULA for half that price.

When the weather gets hot, or you run your engine until it's hot, the heat causes the firewall mounted relay to expand and loose electrical contact needed to start the car. You can crank the engine until your blue in the face, it won't start.
