89 dodge dakota

hi I have an 89 dodge dakota truck 4 cyl
if I put the clutch in it starts up just find
but if i release the clutch while in neutral
the motor dies anyone no what this could be?

the clutch does not need to be pressed down to try to start it does attempt to start weather I have if pressed or not but will only run if I hold the clutch to the floor the second I let it out rpms drop down the engine dies?
so I am stumped.

The clutch interlock switch is out of adjustment, needs cleaning, or needs replacement. They normally turn on at the position where the clutch disengages; i.e., .60 to .80 inch from the fully depressed position.

All I know is start from the beginning. Was it like this before you did the clutch? If not, go back and check your work. It doesn't make any sense unless you think you have it in neutral when really it's in gear. Maybe shifter in wrong?

I'm sorry, I see now you didn't replace clutch. Here's what I would do. Let clutch out on a nice 2000 rpm rev abruptly with e-brake on. If truck wants to move, you probably have a broken synchro in trans. If it doesn't, you got something else going on that makes no sense.
