2004 pontiac grand am transmission

My 2004 Pontiac Grand Am has developed a new problem. It has almost 83,000 miles on it and 2 weeks ago I had the gas pedal floored and my RPMs were going up, but my speed wasn't. It did it again this past Saturday.
Any suggestions?

If you haven't been changing the transmission fluid and filter every 30,000 miles, you may be looking at a rebuild. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound good.
