2001 chrysler town and country oil gauge comes on

My 2001 town and country (3.8 engine) engine light came on a couple of weeks ago, I checked most things I can check visually and found the oil about a quart low so I added the oil and disconnected the battery to reset the alarm. About a week later the light came on again then the oil light started coming on intermittently when the van is idling, it does turn off as soon as I step on the accelerator. I changed the oil and I still have the same symptoms. I am thinking it’s either the oil pressure gauge or the oil pump, any suggestions on how to pinpoint the cause without having to replace the parts (process of elimination).

thank!

Thoughts:

. Idle speed may be too low.

. Clean oil sender unit connector, with 240 grit abrasive cloth.

. Check connector tightness, crimping with pliers if needed.

. If sludge has developed, either remove and clean oil sender unit with brake cleaner or replace it.

. Consider using synthetic oil for the cleanliness and margin of safety it offers.

sam-h agrees: It turns out that the idle is low; there is a small vacuum leak.
