Title tranfer problems

OK, so this guy gave me a used car (his old one) as a gift. He signed the title over to me and then i signed the title. Soon afterward, he decided that he wanted it back to sell to a friend of his for $1000. Pretty selfish/childish right?

So i was wondering if, since the title was in fact signed over to me, but not registered in my name... who has the technical (legal) right to decide who the owner is? Is the car technically mine, since he also signed the title? and is it illegal for him to sell the car to this other guy while the title is in my name?
