1999 Honda Accord Front End Noise

1999 Accord EX. 130,000 miles, 5 spd manual trans.

Lately a noise has been coming from my drive train. It is sort of a "wum wum wum wum wum" low-pitched sound that occurs only (and always) when moving and increases with speed.

It is not a tire problem. I have rotated and inspected the tires with no results. Also, there is nothing being transmitted to either the steering wheel or brake pedal.

I would not think it is a CV gone bad...there is no clicking noise while turning, not even when accelerating around a corner from a stop.

I have also removed the steering knuckle to inspect the wheel bearing hub. The hub turns smoothly and there is no play in it. However, I don't know if this is an effective test for a wheel bearing problem.

I did notice that the driver side CV half-shaft inserts into a bushing mounted about halfway between the wheel hub and the transfer case. I did not inspect this bushing but wonder if it could be the culprit?

Did you figure out the problem with your accord? I have the same issue with mine but can't figure it out. Please help. Post here if you have an answer.

In my situation I was able to eliminate the problem with a new set of tires. As much as the old tires did not show any signs of abnormal wear, they turned out to be the culprits. If you have any appreciable amount of wear on your tires, I would suggest replacing them as a way to solve your problem.
