1998 Explorer Sport reverse hesitates

Hello I have a 1998 Explorer Sport, 2WD v6. It has a 140k miles on it and I have never really had any problems with it. However now when I put it in reverse it takes anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds for it engage. When it does engage it gives a little jerk but not that bad. After that everything is great till I need reverse again. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Has the trans fluid been checked and/or changed?

There is something sticking internally.

Online I can't find any bulletins for this concern.
