1994 mercury marquis

My 1994 Mercury Marquis is stuck in park. I can't shift to any gear. Any ideas?

Try holding up on your gear shift and turn the steering wheel. It worked for me!

Start car, push brake pedal down for 5 seconds to release interlock, and, if you are on an incline, have others push the car in the opposite direction, while you shift out of park. To prevent this problem in the future, put your parking brake on before shifting into park.

I've had this problem and found that the brake light switch wasn't operating. Make sure that when you depress the brake pedal that the brake lights come on. If not replace the brake light switch on the brake pedal shaft.
