    1989 Ford F 150 Fuel Pump
1989 Ford f-150, standard 5 speed, 4.9 liter 6 cylinder, the problem is the high pressure fuel pump does not charge (get power) when the key is turn on, initially it was an intermittent prblem, the fuse link, EEC relay, Fuel pump relay, and the high pressure pump have been replaced, it ran fine for a month, then sat for three weeks, went out to use it the other day and it would not start. Now I have a hot wire from the battery to the high pressure pump and the pump runs and the truck will start. Is there something in the ignition switch or steering column that I am over looking?

. Check all under hood and under dash fuses with a test light or multimeter:

While you are at it, I would disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the fuel pump fuse. Clean the fuse's contacts with abrasive cloth or steel wool. Apply a light coating of dielectric grease. Do the same thing for the female socket. Afterwards, repeat the process on the fuel pump relay. It's not uncommon for corrosion and dirt to cause major problems with truck under hood fuse/relay boxes. I would do this for every fuse and relay in both the under hood and under dash fuse/relay boxes.

. Clean the two main connectors going to the under hood fuse box from the alternator.

. Check the ignition switch for wear, pitting, or melting, if the problem persists. It wouldn't surprise me if the switch is bad.

Ford Escort Fuel Pump [ 2 Answers ]

I have recently replaced the fuel pump in a 1989 escort. Everything works when it is sitting on the ground. When I put it into place it doesn't work. Any ideas. My nephew bought the car to drive back and forth to school in so he doesn't have a lot of money for a mechanic to fix it.
