Rotate the engine to Top Dead Center and with the distributor on the highest point of the lobe, the air gap should be .015 - .021" That's point gap, only... The best way to set the ignition for proper coil saturation is with a dwell meter. This takes practice not often found today.

Picture the thickness of a matchbook.
Old Hat: the old fashioned matchbook had an appropriate gapping thickness and the striker could be used to burnish the point contacts.
