I cannot remember the title of this book. It is was published some time before 1992, but I'm not sure how long before. It is about 2 painters (Jack and Mack) and they would be painting and would fall off of their ladders and their paint would mix and make a different color. Every time that would happen it would say "Jack and Mack make a mess", but that is all I remember.
