Can't remember title or author!

I read a paperback book about 15 years ago and now can't remember the title or author. The story is about a man and woman, their life together - having children and raising them. I can't remember if the story took place in the US but it was when times were tough because it seemed like they were always working hard. One specific thing I remember is that the husband has an affair with a woman who lives nearby and I think the child is a girl. The husband's wife realizes that the child is her husband's because of his concern for the child but I don't know that they ever actually have a conversation between themselves about the child being his. I think the child eventually comes to live with them.
Please help - it's driving me crazy!

This sounds like a classic Danielle Steele plot, but it could be any one of fifty thousand copycats! More info, please. I can think of a dozen or more authors that write this kind of emotional fiction. Was it a Harlequin Romance? More importantly, why is it so important? Maybe we can help out through a back door...?

The book was not a romance novel or mystery type. It was mostly about the life of this man & woman - a quiet endearing love. Another thing neither of them had fancy careers or a lot of money. The family worked hard off the land. It would remind you of a Thorn Birds type book however I think it took place in the U.S.
