    Nose piercing/repiercing
I had my nosed pierced about 10-12 weeks ago and after 2wks the stud accidentally got knocked out over a holiday weekend so I inserted a nose ring that I had bought for after healing. It looked fine/felt fine but then several weeks later after I wore a white gold stud, the skin around the piercing was puffy and a little red and irritated. Not infected so I just kept dealing with it. We were traveling last weekend and it got lost so I went approximately 2 days w/o a stud and when I returned home it was pretty closed up. I decided to let it close all the way and repierce. Anyone know how long I should wait to do that or has anyone else had problems with them being puffy and irritated?

I would say 2-3 months to allow it to completely heal (the wound) and also if there was any infection/bacteria in the wound, they will die and it will heal up in that time too. Also, if you repierce right away, the additional trauma lay lead to abcesses and that's not fun. Obviously it is your own choice but I would wait a few months.

I agree, wait at least 3 months. Adding trauma onto trauma is not a good idea and not healthy for you. If your previous piercing is showing signs of infection, I recommend going to the doctor for antibiotics. Infection in piercings will not usually just die on its own (at least not in any of the cases I've seen :p).

While your previous piercing is healing, continue taking care of it as if there was jewelry in it; clean it with antibacterial soap and don't play with it or pick at it. Continue cleaning it about once a day until it is fully healed to ensure that no added bacteria form. After a few months if everything is back to normal, I don't see any reason why you can't get it re-pierced.

The redness and puffiness could have been caused by a number of things, such as irritation to the metal that you used, playing with it too much, cleaning it too much, or changing the jewelry too much. Piercings can be stubborn if you do any of the things that I just listed. I hope everything goes okay and good luck! :)

In agreement with the 3 months. Must warn you though when I got a piercing re-done it really did hurt because its scar tissue and therfore more sensitive. Also its good to leave a nose ring in for a while before removing it because your body tries to push it out and close to heal itself. The nose ring doesn't need to be taken out you can just push it out a little bit and clean with a cotton bud and solution. Its putting it in and taking it out that's most likely causing this irritation.

Just wanted to give this piece of information to everybody out here. My daughter had her ear cartilage pierced a few years ago and after a couple of weeks, it got infected and she took it out. Now, its been over 3-4 years and she has a "bump" on the back of her ear that looks like a "another ear" is growing behind her ear... She tries to keep it covered up with her hair down, but when she puts it up, everybody can see the "bump". Eventually she has to have it surgically removed but since she has not health insurance, that will have to wait.
Remember kids... piercings and tattoos CAN get infected and you have to pay for it to get it fixed.

Wow, I'm sorry that happened to your daughter. I hope she gets that taken care of soon.

I would like to make it known though, that infection is not the only cause of this bump. There are a couple of factors that can cause bumps and keloids.

For when she does get insurance, has she talked to anyone about steroid injections to get rid of the bump rather than surgery?:)
