    Is my belly piercing infected?
Hey.. I got my belly pierced like 4 days ago and I have been cleaning it faithfully 3 times a day with dial soap & bactine. Well on the top part of the piercing I'm starting to notice a little tiny bump. Its really small, you can hardly notice it but I don't know what it is and I'm beginning to worry. I haven't been getting crust around the piercing & no liquid or bodily fluids have been coming out of it so I'm guessing it's a good sign? Also I know your not suppose to touch it unless your hands are clean because it could get infected if your hands are dirty.. oh and then earlier when I cleaned it, it kind of burned a little bit... is it healing OK or do you think I got the beginning of an infection?

It could be an allergic reaction to the bactine or maybe even the piercing ring. Some people find with cleaning piercings and even tattoos that they are allergic to things like that. Since you want to make sure its okay to just clean it with soap I'd call your doctor and ask about it just to make sure. I wouldn't want you to take my advice only since I haven't seen your belly!

It doesn't sound like infection to me, but it does sound highly irritated. Cleaning it 3 times a day is way too much. I know it seems like the more you clean it, the better it is for the piercing, but that is not true. The more you clean it, the more you prolong healing. Clean it once a day with anti-bacterial soap (good job for using that by the way), and other than that, leave it alone.

Things to look for as far as infection is a yellowish discharge that doesn't smell too good.

Also, you didn't mention if you were using salts to clean it. If you are, stop using them. They dry out the piercing and also cause irritation :)

No I'm not using salts or anything I did what the piercing place said to do but the only thing is they told me to clean it twice a day and if I don't then dirt will get in it

Twice is even better than three times. Please don't clean it three times a day anymore.

If you are going to clean it twice, the best times to clean it are when you wake up, and before you go to bed. That way there is a good space between cleanings and the risk of irritation is lower.

Also, if you are wearing a shirt the risk for dirt getting in it is pretty low. When you are wearing a shirt, make sure no lint from the shirt gets tangled in the piercing. :)

Yea I'm being real careful of that... and I don't touch the piercing or nothing but when I'm cleaning it is it OK to touch it if my hands are clean?

When you clean it you should rotate it, only ONCE! Don't twist it around a ton of times.

When you rotate it, make sure you wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap before you do so. You should touch the piercing only if necessary, and make sure you have clean hands :)
