Thoughts from Bunkhouse Logic, a book by Ben Stein

Maybe 20 years ago, a favorite library patron (who looks a lot like Ben Stein, hmmmmm)

Suggested I read this nifty little book, and he even gave me two copies (why two, I have no idea). It's a terrific gift idea for someone who is job hunting or graduating from high school/college or considering when to retire or struggling to make a life-changing decision.

The book was retitled and reprinted in 2006, How Successful People Win: Using Bunkhouse Logic to Get What You Want in Life.

Here is what goodreads says about it:

"How Successful People Win is a serious self-help book using as its central metaphor the life of the cowboy and his behavior as he leaves his bunkhouse. Based upon a lifetime of observation of the successful and how they got that way, Ben Stein suggests that you imitate the determination, inner mobility, activity, flexibility—and the refusal to indulge in self-pity—of the cowboy in order to get what you want out of life. The idea is that if you never indulge in making excuses, refuse to let other people's hangups get in your way, and move deliberately toward clearly thought-out goals, you will get where you want to go. Just as the cowboy refuses to allow himself to get sidetracked by trivia, so can you refuse to allow life's inevitable challenges and distractions mar your own success and happiness. The choice is yours."

And here are several quotes that we might be able to apply to our lives and thinking no matter what stage in life we're at. I'll leave it to you to spin each quote as you need to. --

    1. “The cowboy can't get anything done sitting in the bunkhouse and brooding.”

    2. “The cowboy moves on to the next pasture when the well dries up.”

    3. “You can't win when you are not at the table.”

    4. “Persistence is the one essential ingredient.”
