Years of colouring

For a few years now I have been dying my hair with L'Oreal Casting with breaks of a few months inbetween. I would really like to lighten my hair as it is currently a dark/medium brown. Can this be done? I tried one of the L'oreal kits with seperate highligh kits (experte I think) which lifted the colour on these sections, just wanted to check what was best product etc to use in the UK?
