    Dear haylz-p,

I'm not sure if those moons are a good thing or not, either! However, an alternative medical practitioner told me at an event in 1995 that they mean how well your body is oxygenated. I had/have very little "mooning" in my fingernails, and he said that that is very bad and that I must have cancer or something (which to my knowledge, to this day, I don't have!), so, I guess, we have to take what he said with a grain of salt!

Why don't you ask your own family doctor, or internist, or maybe even your manicurist, if you have one? Cheers!

The moons on your nails are called lunula... or half moon... its said that if you have these on some of your finger you have low zinc in your body... I really don't think its anything to worry about but if you are that concerend you can go see your doctor

Are you referring to those white moon things on your fingernails? Well I'm not really sure what those are either I use to have them. Well I don't know, my mom told me a long time ago that it means you are lacking some sort of vitamin or something, but don't worry too much about it ;) it'll begone eventually. See a doctor if you are really unsure :P

Hmm, interesting. I too have these "white moons" on my thumbs only. Actually though when I was in Cosmetology school way back when, I was told that this is simply a fresh form of nail. It's there for protection in case your whole nail gets ripped off. That is where the new nail starts. It's most common in the thumbs. Just to be sure, are you talking about directly at the very base of the nail, next to the cuticle? Because that's what I'm thinking of.

As for lacking vitamins, usually that is represented by white lines going up and down the nail. The consistency of the nail would typically be very brittle and thin in those instances as well. Just a thought for you. I definitely do not think what you're seeing is anything to be overly concerned about in my humble opinion. Hope this helps!

I've heard that when the moons on your fingernails are quite large, it means that you are near death. That happened with my mother-in-law. I still wonder about that.

I'm in liver failure and about 4 months ago while in the hospital the Doctor told me that if I looked a my nails I would notice my "moons" have disappeared and that that was a sign of liver damage. Well yesterday I noticed that my entire nail is now that whitish moon color and only a thin strip of healthy pink is showing at the very top of my nail bed. I sure hope what nanaraine1946 wrote is not true otherwise I better get my stuff in order and quick. I have a physically this week and I'll ask another doctor and get her look on it.

I have been taking Saw Palmetto tabletts for prostate health which contain 100% of all the zinc I need. Since about 2 months now all but my thumb nail moons have disappeared. I read an article if you have low zinc that your moons will be more present an bigger. This kind of conferms that for me.

To me it looks like a sunset going down. I believe the "sunset" in your fingernail determine when you will die. The bigger it gets it means you have less time to live and the smaller it means more time. Maybe it's a sign.

The half moon in nails indicates a good thing.its said in one book "health in your hands" that if you have adequate sperms then this moon appears.if u are losing too much sperm either by sex or masturbation, then the half moon may not be there.so for persons about o marry or want children they should have a half moon.those who learn more have a half moon.also absence of it is not actually good.for very thin yogis there may not be a half moon atall even if they are strict bhrahmacharies.they may be too lean,it indicates they don't have more reserved energy.their body generate only adequate energy for each purpose. Ridiculus! Is't
