When does 30 days start on debt verification

We are trying to refinance our house and there is an old credit card debt on our credit report that was actually incurred by my husbands ex wife. She actually got the card without his knowledge or consent. So yes he is probably still liable because they were married at the time. Deal now is that he is going to have to pay this to try to clear up his credit but Asset Acceptance just reported it to the credit bureau and never notified him. He knew nothing about Asset Acceptance and its debt collection until the new mortgage company pulled up his credit report. Asset has purchased the account from Providian which goes all the way back to Jan of 2000. I new wife, Sue) spoke with them today and they were so rude. I offered to settle the debt but they came up with an unreasonable number so I said that perhaps I should try to settle this with Providian. Mr Melton a supervisor at Asset went ballistic on me and told me I couldn't do that that he now owned the debt. When I said that I might call them anyway just to see what could be done he started saying well "How is your house shopping coming?" in a very sarcastic manner. Screaming at me the whole time. I assume he saw mortgage companies pulling our credit and was telling me this, implying, you are't going to get a mortgage until you pay off this debt. I called his supervisor and when he answered the phone again he started screaming at me again. What a nut. Any way to make a long story longer my question is that since we were never notified by Asset when does the 30 day period start? I am sending the letter for dispute and verification as if it starts today as this is the first time we ever conversed with them. Is this going to screw up my verification rights because they put it on my credit in May but I did not find out about it until a couple of days ago. What does the statute of limitations do to this debt and its collectibility since it is seven years old. My husband was aware of the Providian collection on his credit report for 2 years but since it did not affect us until now and it wasn't his debt he didn't do anything about it. Hope someone can help soon, I need to send the verification letter tomorrow. Thanks zoobeedo(Sue)
