If I knew what state you were in it might help. But things you can do to streach your $$$$. Buy your sons clothes at thrift stores or consignment shops as fast as they grow you can find very nice clothes cheap. I do that for my G-daughter. Also take his old toys and clothes to a consignment shop and you will get paid when they sell. Consider re-evaluating your current insurance to see if lowering limits will lower your bill. That could be money to apply to the outstanding loan. When you get your stimulus check don't apply it to the outstanding loan all at once. Bank it and make monthly payments from it until you can get on your feet better. A one lump payment does very little in the long run. You maybe able to establish a good relationship with the collection company by doing this. Be kind when you call , inform them you are attempting to pay and will they reduce the interest. Next do not make a settlement payment with the collection co. You will have to pay tax on any written off amount as earned income at the end of the year in which it is paid. Good Luck

Sorry to say but I don't live in the us I live in canada, ontario so maybe at this point I know you might not know what to do there... I know buy's clothing at second hand stores and getting ride of some of my son's toy's are a great start but we really need to do something faster acting then that it's getting to the point of us probably going to have to file for bankruptcy I know I spelt that wrong sorry, but if we don't figure out something soon I don't know what we are going to do or where we can turn anymore, and we both don't want to have to do that... 7 years is a long time to have bad credit if not longer than that... any other thoughts from anyone on what else we could do fast to help us out?
