What did this "notice" say?

Did it list a date for you to appear in court, or, did it ask if you intended to defend yourself or admit to the debt prior to a court date?

If the later, just state that you intend to defend this suit and will appear for the hearing. Unless it asks for specific information, you need not be too detailed in this answer, just a yes you will appear on no you won't appear and you admit guilt.

It depends on if it is a small claims case, or a civil case where you may need an attorney.
If this is not small claims, I would talk to an attorney before you go too far.

Good Luck.
