summons

I am confused about a summons I recieved. It doesn't have a court date on it. The sherrif that delivered it said that it was just a summons notifying me that I owed the debt, and that Discover card will be taking legal action. My question is, will I get a court date before a judgement is issued, or is the summons my last chance?
