old debit

I was contacted last week my a collector that said I owed 3300 and they would accept, he told me AI was being sued unless I paid. I made arrangements and then started to investigate Aurora Gold and Assoc and found out they are not very nice.
The date was from 1999 they say I paid in 2002 I believe my staute of limitation in New Jersey is 6 years.
I called them and told them I was investigating and now they want all 3300 he said I need to give him 436.00 for a long time. (Our original agreement was 1000). What should I do continue to pay or just forget them?
I tried contacting a lawyer but can't afford him...
Please help

What does being nice have to do with anything?

If you owe the debt, you have an obligation to pay it.

Tell them you want the debt validated, and you want proof that they have a legal right to attempt to collect this debt.

This will buy you some time, and there is the chance that they can't or don't verify and you will be off the hook, if they can't.

Then again, you could just forget them, and see what happens.
