Statute of limitations

I have a default judgement but am now questioning the statue of limitations. I will be contacting an attorney to help me, but I have questions on time limits. On my credit report it shows last activity 01/02, but there is a payment posted in 8/02. However I do not believe I made any such payment. (In fact I am sure of it and I do not remember it showing up on previous credit reports in early 2006.) The account was charged off in 7/2002. Another company purchased the account. On my credit report for this new company it shows date of last activity 1/02 and not payment made. They filed a suit against me 7/25/06. Unfortunately for me I did not respond within the time payment. My husband tried to commit suicide and we had to move during that time frame and unfortunately I was distracted. I have never received any official notification, however I believe it is only because mail was not forwarded. I looked in court records and found the judgement issued in October 2006. I am researching all avenues. My only income is civil service retirement and I am still trying to deal with my husband's mental health issues.
Is it too late for me to do anything? I have asked for info before on this site, but am now particularly interested in SOL and any actions I can take even after this long. I reside in Texas.
