Private Student Loan

Recently my Private Student loans where handed over to an attorney for debt collection. I understand they want the full amount, which if I could pay that they wouldnt be in default.
Is it possible to make a smaller good faith type payment.
Also I am a resident of Texas and if I remeber correctly Texas has laws against wage garnishments and such. I know federal student loans they can still take wages and taxes ext.. but do private student loans fall in the same jurisdiction?

Any help would be apprecated
Thanks
