    Lien on junk car
I need to get rid of a old car which has a lien on it. I'd like to simply take it to a junkyard to get it out of my backyard. Will junkyard accept it or how do I dispose of it?

One option:Send it to a public auction. Whatever it sells for, you may owe the diference between what you owe and what the car sells for. Who knows, the car may sell for more than the lien and you could come out on top. States differ in laws regarding requiring a title to accept a junk car. Some check and need the title, some don't. Call a junkyard and find out if you need the title (don't mention the lien when asking, just simply ask if they require the title, perhaps say you lost the title). All that said, you will still owe the balance of the lien, they will come after you no mattter what you do.

One way they might possibly not be able to come after you is if a junkyard accepts the car and doesn't check for a lien and sells the car or parts it out. In that case, the junkyard can be held liable for at least paying back some of the money they made off the sale. You would then only owe the difference (if any) between what the junkyards profit was and what is still owed, if anything.

Another option could be to "part out" the car. If the car has many useable parts, like good tires, expensive wheeels, good (or easily fixed) engine (or good engine parts), transmission, interior parts, body parts etc. List parts on craigslist, but first find out the fair price of the items. Replacement car parts are not cheap in many cases, so you could actually end up making money going this route.

How much is the lien vs the value of the car, either as a whole or parted out? That info would be helpful in determining the best course of action here.
