judgement in texas

my fiance has credit card debt in the amount of around 15000. stopped payment in 2005, and he received information that a judgment was going to be filed against him. doesn't have extra money to pay, lives on the homestead with house and almost 500 acres. Can anyone tell me exactly what can happen?? creditors always make it sound bad, but i am thinking that bankruptcy may be just about his only option.. do creditors have a leg to stand on, or is it just scare tactics?? let me know, any advice would be much appreciated!!
