Credit card debt "open-ended" or "written"?

I have searched dozens of legal forums and not a single person can adequately answer the question: is credit card debt legally "open-ended" or "written" debt? How can this simple matter be so ambiguous? Anyone happen to know about Ohio, or how I can find out about it? Thanks
