assignee or purchased

I'm trying to find out how to determine wheather a law firm collecting on a debt is a assignee or purchaser. The Law office collecting on this account refers to the origional creditor as his client or the plaintiff. Does this mean that he is collecting for the creditor or the collection company (law firm)? Or is this a question that you have to ask the collection company.
