am i legally obliged to pay the creditor and not a bailiff in uk law ?

I was served a civil complaint today. Where an old creditor is suing me for a debt that i owe i am not working but call them and ask to set up a payment arrangment they turned me down asking for more than i can give them my court date is coming up october 1st what should i do

My question is I am 3500 in debt because I lost my job and couldn't pay. I am working now but in collections for my accounts. I read online that if I pay the debt in full I can ask for a deletion of it on my credit. Is this true? Does it work or do they still pull tricks?
