The bank will not just give you the money. If you are the named beneficiary, you will need to provide them with a certified copy of the death certificate.

If you are not the beneficiary, you have to provide them with a copy of the death certificate and a court order. If her estate went through probate that will satisfy the court order. If not you will need to have a judge issue an "Oder of Summary Administration" specifying that your are entitled to the money. You will need an attorney to file a petition with the court to get that.

The exact process may vary somewhat depending on the state she lived in. In Florida, where my mom died, that is what I had to do. But in any state the bank will require legal documentation before they release funds to you.

Once you provide them with the proper paperwork, it should not take long. After my mom died, I hand delivered the court order and death certificate and walked out with a check.
