Meaning of specific Chinese characters on artwork

Dear users of askmehelpdesk.com,

Recently I saw a Chinese piece of art at the wall at my aunt's. I'd like to know what the characters mean. It's a very "simple" drawing of what I can only guess is a kind of monk. I'm not sure about that. Based on the colors me and my aunt guessed it was drawn in the beginning of 20th century. It was bought at The European Fine Art Fair at Maastricht around 1975.

I hope somebody can help me out with those characters...

Luc

ps: I'm sorry the inserted jpegs are very wide, but because the characters are small, I decided not to resize the picture.
