I would also like any info. On A L Grace, I have a sketch of myself drawn by A L Grace from a photo when I was 18mths old, I am now 65. My mother and father managed a public house in Sth. Kensington London and the photo was displayed behind the bar. The artist came in one day and sketched my photo which also appeared in The Tatler my claim to fame. I would be curious to know what knowledge you have of A L Grace.

I have been trying to get info on A L Grace since Feb. I acquired a painting titles "No Heel Taps". It consists of a man nicely dressed drinking out of a tankard. I was told he was a listed artist. I really like his work.

Ihave a print of A L Grace entitled "Called To The Bar" - 2 lawyers drinking in an old pub. It was hanging in "Ye Olde Original Trumpet Inn" in Herefordshire when my Dad took over the license in 1950. He kept it when we left and I brought it to Canada with me and now it is in my living room - can't find any info on Grace except that he lived 1800 - 1900.

I, too am looking for information about A. L. Grace. He was a friend of my parents and was certainly not Victorian. I met him several times as he used to drink in my Grandmother's pub in Hammersmith, London. He had a studio in Talgarth Road, Barons Court and was active pre-war certainly up to the late 1940's or early 1950's. He must have been born around 1900. I believe that A.L. stands for 'Arthur Longland', but he was always known (I don't know why) as 'Toby' Grace. Possibly because he often painted pub and drinking scenes. I have four paintings by him and a pencil portrait that were gifts to my family. I also know that he painted portraits of Joan Hammond (a well-known opera singer) and some for D'Oyly Carte performers who used to visit Hammersmith King's Theatre regularly. Towards the end of the period I knew him, he turned more to flower still life paintings as being more commercial, but these were not very well received. I remember asking him if he had exhibited at the Royal Academy or elsewhere, but he held such institutions in some contempt. Maybe he had been rejected. He said that he just painted for the money and wasn't at all interested in exhibiting.

I have a painting AL Grace of three British servicemen, drinking and singing around a table, with tents behind them. The uniforms look to be after WWI. Three branches, army with a ukele, navy and aircorp, wings on upper arm.

I, too, have a large, lovely painting by A. L. Grace. Its titled "Once Upon a Time" and shows a little boy studying a suit of armor. The child's clothing appears to be in the style of the late 1930's or the 40's. It's in a beautiful, ornate frame and was purchased at London Art Agency, Shaftesbury Ave. many years ago. I'd love to know its value!

You should contact them to see if they want to resell on consignment or buy it from you. Most of the auction sites have some of the values. If they are interested in yours maybe they would be interested in mine.
