durer's young hare 1502

I have a watercolor/print of this painting. It came from my great aunt who was born around 1900 in Milwaukee, WI. The image is approx. 9 3/4"x8 3/4" and has visible what I would call "lines" very close together running vertically through the paper (almost gray in color)when looking at it closely, with tiny dots of white sporadically in those lines. There is a brass or some sort of metal tag on the back that reads F.H. Bresler Co Fine Arts Milwaukee on it. I did take the picture apart(it was held in by little nails) and the image looked to have been cut out because there was a thin line of lighter color around the edges. I was thinking it should have been on thin paper but it resembled a posterboard material. Looked online to find similar old prints but could only find places that will sell you currently made copies. It seems to be a little faded, not bad but not as colorful as the ones online, mine is more subdued in color(possible fading?). Just thought the paper it was on was sort of weird to me and if anyone could tell me how old it might be? Anyways, as always any info would be great- the image is lovely to look at and appreciate it everyday! Did not know anything about the artist until I did a search one day by putting in " rabbit 1502 AD" and imagine my surprise. For those who have not seen his work and love art -you need to take a look - outstanding!!!! Thanks again for taking the time to read!

If you contact the following company, I think that it would be likely that they would be able to give you an accurate idea as to the age of your print.

I found the following information about them on the following link.

Bresler Eitel Framing Gallery, Milwaukee, WI, 53212 - addresses.com

General Information
* In 1882 Frank Durbin and Phillip Poposkey Opened An Art Gallery, Located at 729 North Milwaukee Street, in Downtown Milwaukee This Classic Building, Which Contains a Majestic Spiral Staircase and Print Drawers Built into the Walls, Still Stands. In the Time that These Two Gentlemen Ran the Gallery, They Had the Opportunity to Add Rare Prints and Paintings From Frederick Layton's Personal Collection - Both Men Retired in 1889. At that Time They Relinquished Control of the Business to a Manitowoc Native by the Name of Frank H. Bresler, Who Logically Renamed the Gallery the F.H. Bresler Gallery

* The F.H. Bresler Gallery Quickly Became the Premier Place for Milwaukeeans to Buy Original Art. This Was Due in No Small Part to the Fact that the Bresler Family Made Many Art Buying Trips to Europe to Enhance the Gallery Inventory. Frank Bresler Died in 1931, and His Daughter Gertrude Took Over the Family Business. She Maintained Control of the Business Until 1955, When She Made the Decision to Sell the Family Business to John Seidel

* John Seidel Continued to Run the Business in Much the Same Way As the Bresler Family Had, by Concentrating on Keeping Museum Quality, High-art Objects Available to His Clientele; However, Eventually His Interests Had Turned More to the Appraisal of Art and Less to the Actual Selling of Art. In 1968 He Made the Decision to Sell the Business to the T.C. Esser Company, a Local Paint Company Located in the 3100 Block of West Gallina St.

Thanks for the information about the Bresler company. I contacted them and unfortunately the man who had owned the business previously took all the records of information with him, they have nothing to go by. The best I can do is try to date the print by the history of when he had owned the business (1889-1931), but when the print was actually made or where it came from will apparently remain a mystery. Seems unfortunate since it has a identification number written on it's frame, oh well. Still might go ahead and have it framed properly incase it is fading. Again thanks for the information you provided, at least it gave me an idea of it's age which is helpful.

My pleasure helping you with the information! At least we tried! If you know the name of the man who had the information, perhaps he still has family somewhere that might still have the information. It wouldn't seem right or good for all of the information on those prints to just simply vanish! The information might even be housed at a local art gallery in that area. Might be worth a try contacting some.

When you do hang it up, it's a good idea for it not to be exposed to the sun or any bright lights, since it will then probably fade more easily. Who knows? Maybe more information might turn up? After all, there are images of it available on the Internet?
