Learn the rules, master the rules, then break the rules.

I can't remember where I read that but I feel it is relevent.

I may be wrong but I believe with an artform like anime and manga, one of the best ways to approach it is by copying other works in order to learn the rules and traditions of the style. Only once you have done this can you begin to branch out with confidence and create your own work
