    Whirlpool Gold Catalyst Washer problem
    Hi
    My model number is GSX9885JQ0
The washer will fill with water but doesn't agitate. The light on the control panel blinks instead of being on solid. It doesn't display an error code on the panel, just shows how much time is left. I also tried unplugging and letting it reset. I also tried using just the spin option. It didn't spin and the spin light also flashed but it did count down the time and shut off at the end. Did NOT pump out the water in the tub at the end though.
I do hear a click when I put the lid down and a thunky like clunk when it should be starting to agitate but then nothing else happens.
I attempted to check the lid switch but have no clue how to access it. I found a site that said there should be 2 screws on the control panel but I can't seem to locate them. Any ideas what is wrong? Should I attempt to fix it or just chuck it and buy a new one - ps it was pretty darned expensive and isn't all that old.
    Thanks
    Davida

On some models (mabye not yours) if the belt is broken or loose it will not agitate. Also it could be the "helix" which differentiates between spin and agitate for the washer. Take off the cover if you can and watch while in operation. The motor should be turning in agitate mode, which should turn a belt, which turns the drum. If you don't have belts you may have gear problems. Might be time for an appliance repair serviceman.

What light on the control panel is blinking? Sometimes a blinking light is an error code. Just so you know, you're washer doesn't have a belt, so don't look for one. Also, if you take off the cabinet, the unit won't run. It's entirely possible you have an obstruction in the drain system. Let me know exactly what light is blinking and how long it takes from the time you press start that is starts to do so. Thanks.

The light in the arrow above the word WASH blinks if you are trying to wash a load. The light in the arrow above the word SPIN blinks if you tell the washer to try to spin. None of the error codes show up in the time remaining window, it just shows the minutes left. It starts to blink as soon as it hits the agitate cycle. It will fill, but won't agitate and after it makes the thunk clunk sound just sits there silently with the red light blinking in the arrow above the word WASH. Hope this is clear.

The screws to open the control panel are located on the back side of the control panel. They go straight down through the back corners of the control panel into the top of the machine. Remove these two phillips screws. Then pull the control panel towards you while lifting. Once the control panel is free of the machine top, continue lifting and the control panel will flip over backwards. Do you have a volt/ohm meter? The first thing to check is the off balance switch. Begin by unplugging the machine. The easiest way to check that switch is to remove the connector marked P5 from the control board. Then, using an ohm meter, check for continuity between terminal 1 (black wire) and terminal 3 (grey wire). If you read a good circuit, then the switch should be good. If the circuit shows open, then either the lid switch is bad (or the lid is open... make sure it's closed) or the off balance switch is bad. The machine probably won't do much if either of these is true. Let me know what you find. Thanks.

OK I have it open and have located p5. I have an ohm meter but am unsure of exactly how to use it to check for continuity. I folowed the instructions for checking resistance between the #1 and #3 and got 0 on the meter.
    Is that correct?

0 ohms of resistance is indeed a closed circuit. No resistance means that the no-load circuit is closed. So, your lid switch is closed and the unbalance switch is closed which indicates that both parts are okay. I will have to ponder the next step for a while.

OK I also tried the diagnostic test for neutral drain/spin test.
The display showed t4 and the soil level MORE LED was on but there was NO ACTION.

I have the same model (Whirlpool gold catalyst washer GSX9885JQ0). I am having the same problem. It is not under warrranty any more. The basket drive has been replaced twice and we have only owned it for 5 yrs. Not sure if this is the problem again and was wondering if youv'e had any success with fixing your problem.

Melsinn buddy, either you do the laundry of all your neighbors or you way overload your washer! Do you have a problem with water on the floor ever? Twice in 5 years is quite excessive unless you got a lemon or on the replace also lemon parts. Just a thought.

I purchased the washer from ABC Warehouse's clearance center. It had cosmetic damage, but it is possible it had internal damage as well. I do laundry frequently, so there is less of a chance to overload. I have never had water on the floor, or over sudsing. I think you are right when you say it is just a lemon or the repairmen that have been out to fix it are not using quality parts. From what I have read online this model has had frequent problems. Thanks for trying to help out.

    Hello everyone!

I was having some problems with my frig as well. I didn't have the money to have someone come out.

I found this website and they will help you DIY!! They'er great.

It only cost me $60 dollars and they mailed me out my parts. I could have gone to get them myself but there wasn't a shop around me. They walked me through the whole trouble shooting of the machine.

I have this model also and have spent numerous hours with repairmen when it was under warranty with the cycle starting then stopping midway and making a low buzz sound... after slamming lid several times it will start up.. now that is not even working.. the timer has been replaced twice... most frustrating appliance I have ever owned... considering giving it to an enemy and buying a new machine...
