Whirlpool Duet Dryer is tripping breaker

Asked Feb 11, 2009, 05:05 PM — 4 Answers
I have a whirlpool duet dryer that won't let me reset the breaker. The Breaker is a 40amp and will reset with the dryer unpluged. I have taken the whole thing apart and have not found any loose wires. Does anybody have a solution?

If on a 40 Amp breaker and tripping, then you have a very good short or a bad breaker. If capable and with power disconnected, I would eleminate heater or other circuits(wires or traces feeding same load). If you had an Amprobe, you could clamp around suspected
Load, have some one turn On and see If Meter Pegs(Beryond 40) on each part of the whole circuit, before it trips.

Boognishterry - one place that could be causeing this shorting out and thoowing the breaker is the heating coil may be grounded;;
#1- to check this out ; get a volt-ohm meter and pulthe power cord out of the receptical ,or put breaker in full off ;; #2 remove back panel of dryer ,so you can get to the heating coil;; #3- with the volt ohm meter set to rx1 setting ,remove the wires from the terminals on the heating coil, put one prob from the meter to one of the terminals on the heating coil,and the other prob from the meter touch the metal duct with it ;; now if the meter reads high <the unit is good and not grounded and if the meter needle swings toward the low end "o" <the coil is grounded a more then likely have to be replaced ( check this out < remove the duct to where you can see inside to see if you can see the coils touching the duct :: there is a lot of ways this can happen
And cause the grounding< one way <the heating of the coils expanding and becomeing loose and droping down and touching the duct > hope this or( strats) help you out ; also I have seen breakers become bad and triip for nothingas he said above post :: good luck and god bless (stay
safe -cut off power before starting to work on it :: f.b.e.

I took the bottom front of the dryer off and found like ten bucks in change. Vacuumed out all the lint. Put it back together and took the back panel off. vacuumed out all the lint. I found what was causing it to short out was some of the change that fell in the bottom landed on one of the connections and that is what cause the breaker in the house to trip. It was an interesting learning experience. I hope this helps someone else get thier dryer working again. One last thing if lighting is not too good use a fllashlight to make sure you get all the lint.
