What can I do to hook up my dryer?
We just moved into a new house and we cannot hook up our dryer! It has the 'standard' (as far as I know it is standard) big huge 4 prong plug. But where the connections are for our washer and dryer there are only regular standard 3 prong plug outlets. I did notice what looks like a gas 'connector' there. Can I buy something to convert my 4 prong plug into a 3 prong outlet? Or am I S.O.L.? We just bought the washer and dryer set a few months ago so I do not want to have to go buy a new one that runs off gas. Do I have any options at all? Are gas dryers really that common? In all the houses I have been in (including my families) I always see the big 4 prong outlets I have never seen a gas one.

NO, you can not change the plug. A four prong is for a higher amp plug. You would need to have an electrician run a 240amp(? Correct me if I am wrong) line.

The three prong is for a gas dryer since it doesn't require as much electricity to run.

StaticFX told you about a regular 120 volt plug, it is possible that the "regular standard 3 prong plug outlets" that you mentioned could be an old plug that was used for dryers. So how big is this plug and is it one that you could plug a toaster or a mixer into, if so that is what StaticFX was talking about. If it is a large plug it may be a dryer plug and you could adapt it with another plug to work with your dryer.

Washer Dryer Hook-up [ 5 Answers ]

I just inherited my sister's 8 year old washer and dryer (gas). The super came by and told us he would need to replace some of the hook-ups, for a total of $170. That seems a little bit expensive. Is that a normal price to replace the washer hoses, necessary clamps and valves, the gas line, etc?...
